Squirrel? Oh Joy!

I am a cook-book-aholic. Yes I admit it. I am completely addicted to buying and reading cookbooks. I'm not addicted to cooking however, just flipping through pages and pages of recipes, drooling over fabulous recipes that I might prepare one day. So of course one of the first things I do in someone elses kitchen is glance over at their cookbook collection and see what they have that's new to me.

Southern Belle has a nice collection, mostly books of southern type recipes with that 'downhome' flair. Last night I noticed that she had the classic Joy of Cooking out on her table and so I picked it up and plopped myself down in her big comfy couch (yes she has a couch in her kitchen- I love it!). This was the newest edition, published just 2 years ago and I suddenly realised that I didn't have it on my shelves! I was sorely tempted to pull out my fabulous mobile phone which has the internet on it (I am not called 'Gadget-Girl' for nothing!), and point my browser at amazon.com and order one immediately. But I resisted, saving that task for later.

Then I noticed that SB had another copy of this cookbook on her shelves. An old one. And after glancing through it I knew I wanted this one as well, for it is completely different. All sorts of old recipes and information.

Like recipes for cooking wild game! Mmmmm delicious right? Think again. Haven't you always wanted to know how to cook....... well..... let's say..... squirrel for instance? Or woodchuck?? Or beaver?? Or porcupine?? Or possum????? Seriously did they or DO they eat those animals in America???? Did you know you have to slit the squirrels skin and stand on its tail and pull the darn skin off??? Or that you should CATCH a possum a week before you want to feast on him and feed him bread and milk??? Unbelievable but true! The original edition makes riveting reading and I've just discovered that you can buy a facsimile copy of the 1931 edition on Amazon. How can I resist? I'm off to order a cookbook or two. But I'll be back.

I don't think I'd actually want to cook squirrel or possum for that matter, but it sure sounds like fascinating reading!

ll.t... I was thinking about that. I can"t remember ever seeing any wildlife in Albania other than street dogs/cats and one huge rat in the Blok!

CanSwiss... me either but reading it outloud with a southern drawl was fun!

its... darling... you haven't even been in Canada for that long and you're already making beaver jokes!

oreneta... it is amazing! I just ordered the newest edition and will have to borrow Southern Belle's old one!

Sunday brunch ethics:

I am seriously thinking about becoming a vegetarian.

Last night I have read in Maxim (or was it Blender?) that apparently in Korea they make alcohol from fermented baby mice fetuses.

Squirrels, woodchucks, beavers and especially porcupines...way to cute and innocent to die and be eaten! Kicia looks like a skunk. Would anyone's mouth water at hs sight? I hope not! And Coco on the plate? I think not! When do we draw the line?

well, Albania has a time honored tradition of cooking squirrels, little birds, porcupines and other game.
you reminded me of a cousin who was visiting his married daughter in germany, and cooked her and ehr german husband some squirrels he caught at the park for dinner one day.
you can imagine the rest!
