Makfax: Electricity Crisis in Albania Deteriorates

7 January 2007 11:50 FOCUS News Agency

Tirana. The electricity crisis in Albania deteriorates, Makfax reports. Less electricity is imported from abroad and the production of the biggest Albanian water power station Fierza is at its lowest level. That is why the Albanian Energy Corporation announced that it introduces new restrictions. 5 hours electricity regime was imposed in the capital Tirana yesterday. There is lack of electricity for 7 hours a day in the rest of the Albanian towns. The most difficult was the situation in the villages where there is no electricity for 15 hours a day. The reason for the regime is the old electricity distribution system and the lack of funds because of unpaid bills.

Yeah... tell us something we didn't know...

So how long are the cuts now?

So now, in my neighbourhood, the cuts are either from 9-12 am or 12-3 pm every day, and again from 5 pm to 7pm or 7 to 9 pm. That's 5 hours a day which is not too bad I guess but I know that in other neighbourhoods it is much longer. I am curious if this is seen as an improvement to Albanians and if the cuts were much much worse in the past few years? There doesn't seem to be a lot of protest either.

It has been the same for quite a few years now and with rising prosperity (believe it or not) it is easier to cope with since people can afford generators etc.

You could almost look at it as an idyllic, family nite; we'd gather around, cover ourselves in blankets and tell stories :)

Cheer up, it will rain.... eventually.

I bet there is also a surge during those times as well......... sounds as though they need some debt collectors quick.

Does this affect industry as well and offices ?

Hello Demmie.. this is hubby... yes, it affects businesses very much. We have over 90 offices countrywide, and all of them are equipped with generators, UPS's, inverters etc. Power cuts are during the day because businesses use most electricity. This optimizes the savings!!
